How’s the tech? The HR-V does not excel in technology. We see the reason for forgoing a native navigation system in lieu of smartphone integration, which the HR-V does, but it’s always a nice option for those who prefer it. At this price point, the HR-V offers wireless CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a wireless charging pad, and three USB charging ports in the front cabin. However, due to an odd lack of ports in the back, those must be shared with the passengers there. The HR-V’s sound system is also unlikely to impress audiophiles.
The driver assistance systems in the HR-V are fairly extensive, but many of them are tuned too conservatively. The adaptive cruise control is slow to accelerate and overreacts when it stops, and the blind-spot warning system frequently alerted us to vehicles that we believed to be too far away. We couldn’t really use them with passengers on board.
Storage
How’s the storage? For an SUV, being able to haul cargo is crucial, and the HR-V ranks among the best in its class in this regard. Due to its high usability and accessibility, the rear cargo area feels larger than its actual volume (24.4 cubic feet) would indicate. To make it easier to transport longer items, the rear seatbacks can be virtually flattened along with the cargo floor. Additionally, installing car seats is simple if you need to. Your life will be made easier by the ample rear legroom, the large doors, the easily accessible top tethers, and the LATCH anchors. One small caveat: Since the middle position lacks a top tether, front-facing car seats must be installed in an outboard seat.
It’s not great, but it’s pretty good for small item storage in the cabin. Fuel Economy
The fuel economy is how is it? With some of its closest rivals having more potent engines, the all-wheel-drive HR-V only manages an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in combined driving (25 city/30 highway). After driving it on our 115-mile evaluation loop, however, we saw an impressive 31.6 mpg under fairly light traffic conditions. We anticipate that having passengers on board will put more strain on this underpowered engine than most.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
In Europe, the HR-V is powered by a hybrid powertrain borrowed from the Insight and Accord but the The standard gasoline 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the US version produces 158 horsepower. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the Civic uses the same engine as its base powertrain. During our acceleration tests, the HR-V was able to reach 60 mph in 9.4 seconds. Infotainment and Connectivity
Either a 7.0- or 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard on all models; the larger display offers wireless connectivity for those features, but it’s only available on the top EX-L trim. Wireless phone charging is included as standard on the EX-L. Additionally, we anticipate seeing options for features like a Wi-Fi hotspot, in-dash navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
